Meng Jiangnu’s Tears: A Lament Behind the Great Wall

In the distant Qin Dynasty, there was a kind-hearted and outstanding woman named Meng Jiangnu. One day, while busy in her quiet courtyard, she accidentally discovered a person hiding under the cover of grape vines, which scared her and made her pale. Just as he was about to exclaim, the man quickly waved his hand to stop him, his eyes full of pleading: “Please keep silent, save my life! My name is Fan Xiliang, and I am escaping the difficulties of corv é e.” It turned out that Emperor Qin Shi Huang was recruiting laborers everywhere to build the Great Wall, causing countless people to starve and die from exhaustion, and the suffering was unbearable.

Meng Jiangnu felt pity in her heart and saved this gentle and scholarly Fan Xiliang. As they got along, their feelings gradually grew and they admired each other. With the blessings of both parents, they decided to marry together and enter the hall of marriage.

On the day of the wedding, the Meng family set up lights and decorations, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. However, as night fell and the guests gradually dispersed, just as the newlyweds were about to go to the bridal chamber together, a group of fierce officers and soldiers rushed in and without hesitation bound Fan Xiliang and forcibly escorted him to the Great Wall to serve as a laborer. This sudden change left Meng Jiangnu heartbroken, but she did not choose to sink into despair. Instead, she decided to embark on the path of finding her husband.

Meng Jiangnu packed her bags and resolutely embarked on her journey. Along the way, she went through countless hardships, wind, frost, rain, snow, and towering mountains, all of which tested her will and determination. But with her deep love for her husband and tenacious perseverance, she eventually reached the foot of the Great Wall.

Faced with the endless city wall, Meng Jiangnu searched for the construction site one by one, her heart full of longing for Fan Xiliang. Until I inquired with a group of migrant workers who were about to start working, I found out that Fan Xiliang was indeed here, but unfortunately passed away, and his bones were even filled into the city foundation. This news was like a bolt from the blue, causing Meng Jiangnu’s heart to twist like a knife, tears to burst out of her veins, and she cried for three days and three nights in a row. Her true feelings and sorrow moved the world. In the midst of wind and rain, a section of the Great Wall collapsed with a loud bang, revealing the body of Fan Xiliang.

Meng Jiangnu finally met her beloved husband. Although separated by life and death, she completed this reunion that crossed life and death with tears and endless longing. And Fan Xiliang’s story has also become a tragedy that will be passed down endlessly in later generations, warning people of the suffering under tyranny and the brilliance of humanity.
