What does the Taoist saying ‘FuShengWuLiangTianZun’ mean?

When people are browsing the internet, they often come across articles about Taoism, which inevitably mention the phrase ‘FuShengWuLiangTianZun’. These six characters are the most popular titles in Taoism, and people who have a deep understanding of Taoism will say this when they see Taoist priests. So, what exactly does’ FuShengWuLiangTianZun ‘mean? What is the meaning of reciting this title?

In the “Daozang”, the phrase “FuShengWuLiangTianZun” is mentioned quite frequently. For example, in the “Daofa Huiyuan”, it is recorded: “Suitable for extending and enlightening the White Blessing God, all gods, and sending the Plague Division, dispelling the source of illness… Zhixin recites: Fusheng Wuliangtian Zun, incredible merit.” This passage describes how the gods drive away plagues and diseases, eliminate demons and evil spirits, and bring peace to the world and every household. Those who are blessed by the gods will kneel down and praise Fusheng Wuliangtian Zun at this time, grateful for his incredible merit. Therefore, the phrase ‘FuShengWuLiangTianZun’ is actually a gratitude and blessing to the Heavenly Lord. Most other scriptures in the Daozang that involve these words also have similar contexts. We can simply understand it as praising the heavens and praying for their blessings.

It should be noted that many people simplify this sentence as’ FuShengWuLiang ‘, which is incorrect. From the previous explanation, it should be understood that ‘Fusheng Wuliang Tianzun’ does not refer to a specific Tianzun, and ‘Wuliang’ is only a vague indication of quantity. If we only refer to it as the ‘FuShengWuLiang’, it is equivalent to saying ‘All Heavenly Taoist’. These words have no context, and the Heavenly Lords may not understand your meaning. Only by fully reciting the phrase ‘FuShengWuLiangTianZun’ can the Heavenly Sovereign understand your wishes and give you blessings.
