The Legend of the White Snake

During the Qingming Festival, the flowers by West Lake are red and the willows are green, and visitors weave on the broken bridge, creating a beautiful scene full of spring vitality. Suddenly, two women resembling flowers and jade quietly rose from the lake, which was astonishing. How could anyone emerge from the water? Originally, they were two snake spirits formed through cultivation. Nevertheless, they did not harbor any harmful intentions towards others, but only envied the colorful world in their hearts. Therefore, they changed their names to Bai Suzhen and Xiao Qing and came to West Lake specifically to play.

Unfortunately, the heavens suddenly lost their temper and it started pouring rain. Bai Suzhen and Xiao Qing were drenched and had nowhere to hide. Just as they were frowning, they suddenly felt an umbrella over their heads. Turning around, they found a gentle and elegant young scholar covering them from the rain. Bai Suzhen’s eyes met those of this young scholar, and they both blushed uncontrollably, with a hidden admiration in their hearts. Upon seeing this, Xiaoqing quickly asked, “Thank you. May I ask for your surname and name?” The scholar replied, “My name is Xu Xian and I live by this broken bridge.” Bai Suzhen and Xiaoqing also quickly introduced themselves. From then on, the three of them often gathered together, and the relationship between Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian became even deeper. Soon after, they got married and opened a “Baohetang” pharmacy, living a very beautiful life!

Due to the successful treatment of many difficult illnesses and the provision of free medical services to the poor, the pharmacy’s business has become increasingly prosperous, and more and more people are coming to seek treatment from Bai Suzhen. People affectionately call her White Lady. However, the prosperity of the “Baohe Hall” and the happy life of Xu Xian and Bai Niangzi caused dissatisfaction among a monk named Fahai. He found that due to Bai Niangzi’s excellent medical skills, the number of people coming to Jinshan Temple to burn incense and pray for Bodhisattva became very few, and the temple’s incense became cold as a result. Monk Fahai felt very unhappy. On that day, he passed by the “Baohe Hall” again and saw Bai Niangzi treating a patient. Jealousy surged in his heart, and upon closer inspection, he discovered that Bai Niangzi was a white snake that had transformed into a human form!

Although Fahai has some spells, his mind is not right. After realizing the true identity of Bai Niangzi, he spent his days thinking about breaking up Xu Xian and Bai Niangzi, and even wanted to destroy the “Baohe Hall”. So he secretly called Xu Xian to the temple and told him, ‘Your wife is actually a snake spirit. Break up with her quickly, or she will swallow you up!’ Xu Xian was very angry after hearing this and thought to himself, ‘My wife has a kind heart and her feelings for me are deeper than the sea.’. Even if she’s really a snake spirit, she wouldn’t harm me, and besides, she’s pregnant now, how could I abandon her! Fahai was very angry when he saw that Xu Xian did not listen to his persuasion, so he locked Xu Xian in the temple.

In the “Baohe Tang”, Bai Niangzi anxiously waited for Xu Xian’s return. Day after day, waiting left and right, she was extremely anxious. Finally, it was learned that Xu Xian had been detained by Monk Fahai of Jinshan Temple. Bai Niangzi immediately took Xiao Qing to Jinshan Temple and begged Fahai to release the person. When Fahai saw Bai Niangzi, he sneered and said, “Bold demon snake, leave this world quickly, otherwise don’t blame me for not being polite!” Bai Niangzi felt helpless when she saw him refuse to release him. She pulled out the golden hairpin from her head, shook it, and caused a huge wave to rush straight towards Jinshan Temple. Upon seeing this, Fahai quickly took off his robe and transformed into a long embankment to block the entrance of the temple. When the water rises by one foot, the embankment also rises by one foot; The water rises by one zhang, and the embankment also rises by one zhang. No matter how big the waves are, they cannot be surpassed. Moreover, Bai Niangzi is pregnant, making it difficult for her to compete with Fahai. In the end, Fahai used sinister means to collect Bai Niangzi into a golden bowl and press her under the Leifeng Pagoda, causing the loving couple to be separated from each other. After escaping from Jinshan Temple, Xiaoqing, after decades of seclusion and cultivation, finally defeated Fahai and forced him to hide in the crab’s belly, successfully rescuing Bai Niangzi. From then on, she lived happily with Xu Xian and their children, never to be separated again.
