Double sided embroidery, also known as double-sided embroidery, is the process of embroidering images on both sides of the same substrate during the same embroidery process, with identical contours and exquisite patterns. It is one of the excellent traditional ethnic crafts in China. Double sided embroidery originated in the Song Dynasty and is suitable for home decoration, screens, floor screens, fans, and other embroidery products that can be carefully appreciated by people.
After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the government took active protective measures to save, inherit, and develop embroidery skills, and successively successfully developed double-sided three color embroidery, double-sided color embroidery, and so on. By transplanting many excellent traditions of Chinese painting into embroidery, we ingeniously integrate various traditional Chinese arts such as painting, embroidery, poetry, calligraphy, and epigraphy, thus forming a foundation based on Chinese painting. We use more than 70 types of needlework and over 100 colors of embroidery thread, fully exerting the expressive power of needlework and finely depicting the characteristics of the appearance and essence of objects. The embroidery images are vivid and realistic, with bright colors, strong texture, both form and spirit, and bold style.
The difference from single-sided embroidery: single-sided embroidery only focuses on the delicacy of the front side, and the stitch pattern on the back side can be ignored, which cannot be seen after later mounting; However, double-sided embroidery requires both sides to be neat, even, and dense, which is quite difficult. Often, for the same pattern, if it takes one month to make single-sided embroidery, then it takes two months to make double-sided embroidery. So it’s reasonable that double-sided embroidery is at least twice as expensive as single-sided embroidery! Each embroidery product of double-sided embroidery contains the embroidery mother’s painstaking efforts, fine stitches, perfect composition, and gentle and moving embroidery scenery.
Key points of double-sided embroidery:
1、 When embroidering, cut the end of the thread neatly, pierce it from top to bottom, and then start the needle at a distance of two or three threads from the needle. Leave a small amount of thread at the end, press the thread at the end when inserting the needle, connect the short needle several times, hide the thread at the end, so that the thread ends are not exposed on both sides.
2、 When embroidering, keep the needle vertical and do not pierce the embroidery thread on the opposite side.
3、 Master the arrangement of needles: arrange the needles very evenly in order, without improper density, in order to make both sides equal.
4、 Hiding the head is to hide the end of the thread in the last pin, without exposing the thread head.
Double sided embroidery showcases the past and present of Bian embroidery, with one side being traditional and the other modern, or alternatively, one side being economic and the other being cultural.
